FS700 Owners will Bite the Bullet for 4k

It looks like FS700 owners may need to bite the bullet and plunk over a fair amount of pocket change to see 4k RAW out of the nifty little FS700 super 35mm HD/4k capable camera.

With a street price of $9000 FS700 owners will need a new module called the HXR-IFR5 announced this week and priced at around $2000 in order to use the newly announced Sony AXS-R5 external 4k RAW recorder – speculated to run $15k – $20k but we might even see it as low as $6 – 10k.

The new AXS-R5 4k deck is Sony proprietary so it will only work on the F700, F5 or F55. FS700 owners might want to look at other options to record 4k out of the single 3G SDI connector on the FS700, but at this time I’m not certain if the AJA Ki Quad does single 3G SDI but I could be wrong.

Lastly the current price for 1TB SRMASTER media (60 minutes RAW @ 24p) is around $6000 so I would expect around the same for the newly designed media that will work with the AXS-R5.

It is safe to say that 4k RAW is still going to be an expensive proposition no matter which manufacturer you might be looking at.
